Ataxia is a motor coordination disorder that significantly impacts daily functioning. Patients often experience difficulties with balance, muscle control, and purposeful movement, which can make activities such as walking, grasping, or self-care particularly challenging. For physiotherapists and occupational therapists, a thorough understanding of the cerebellum’s role is essential.
This course explores the function of the cerebellum in motor control and learning, as well as its role in regulating muscle tone, generating anticipatory activity, and predicting the sensory consequences of movement. Participants will develop clinical reasoning skills and learn to analyze how the typical challenges of cerebellar ataxia affect the therapeutic process. Special attention is given to how improving postural stability can help reduce fixation strategies, and how the relationship between proximal stability and distal mobility supports functional activities.
The course provides practical tools to guide therapy in a targeted and functional way, with the ultimate goal of enhancing independence and quality of life for patients with ataxia.

Victor Urquizo – gediplomeerd fysiotherapeut – Bobath Advanced Instructor IBITA
Victor Hugo Urquizo, geboren in La Pqz, Bolivia, emigreerde in 1981 naar Duitsland. In 1984 werd hij erkend als fysiotherapeut in Duitsland. In 1994 behaalde hij zijn IBITA-erkende Bobath Basic Tutor (Mary Lynch-Ellerington). In hetzelfde jaar behaalde hij de SRK-erkenning als gecertificeerd fysiotherapeut in Zwitserland. In 2003 behaalde hij zijn IBITA-erkende Bobath Advanced Tutor (Mary Lynch-Ellerington).
Zijn professionele carrière begon in 1986 bij de neurologische kliniek Christophsbad in Göppingen, waar hij leiding gaf aan de afdelingen fysiotherapie, fysiotherapie en oefentherapie. In 1990 werd hij hoofd van de therapieafdeling van het therapiecentrum Burgau. In 1993 werd hij hoofd fysiotherapie bij de revalidatiekliniek Zihlschlacht in Zwitserland. Sinds 2008 is hij werkzaam als hoofd fysiotherapie, ergotherapie, logopedie en neuropsychologie bij het RehaCenter Winterthur en sinds 2019 als hoofd therapieën voor de klinische en poliklinische revalidatieklinieken en -centra van RehaClinic Zürich AG.
Naast zijn therapeutische werk is hij mentor en trainer voor IBITA-instructeurskandidaten in Duitstalige landen. Hij adviseert ook bij diverse onderzoeksprojecten, waaronder die van Myosuisse AG en Reha-at-Home in Zwitserland. Hij geeft nationaal en internationaal les in diverse neurorevalidatiecursussen, voornamelijk in het Bobath Therapy Training Center in Kassel.
Since the beginning of my career, I’ have been working with adult patients with neurological deficits, with a special interest in upper limb rehabilitation.
As head of paramedics (since 2000), I was involved in structuring and organizing neurological therapy, first on a acute geriatric ward with focus on intensive rehabilitation, later (2008) at the rehabilitation-center of Jessa Hospital (90 inpatient, 25 outpatient), Hasselt / Herk-de-Stad, Belgium.
2006, IBITA recognized Basic Bobath course instructor and as such have been teaching in Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, France and Poland. Since april 2015 IBITA recognized Advanced Bobath Course instructor.
